Antheraea polyphemus Painting by jeffquinn Antheraea polyphemus Painting by jeffquinn
18" by 24" acrylic on canvas board.

Professor von Stephens: So, Quinn, whatcha got planned for this one?
Me: Well, i think-
Jake McKibben: (cutting in) Jeff's gonna paint himself lifting weights in the bottom corner! He'll be all, "Argghhh!" (struggling noises, pretending to lift weights)...
(awkward pause)
Me: Yep. That's what i'm gonna do.
Professor von Stephens: (shakes head, walks away)

Sorry, no self-portrait of me struggling under wights. maybe later.

I couldn't get this one to photograph well... but i guess i'm happy with how the tape looks. but i could have done better on the thumbtacks and the moth. *double *

Wow! I am now famous now that you put me in your comments. I'm still disapointed by the fact that you didn't put you in the corner like I said. Oh well. I just got this deviant art thing and have yet to put anything in. i don't think i'm technologically advanced enough to do it. or just smart enough. anyways, good job.

Jake! it's you! welcome to deviantART :devart:!!!

If you need help figuring stuff out, feel free to ask me. To ask questions, you can either send me a note on my front page, or you can just drop a question as a comment like you did here. About submitting your pieces, first you have to have digital pictures of your paintings in the computer...you have that, right? Then, you can click on the "Submit" button at the top of any page on deviantART, it's right next to "Browse" and "shop". You just follow the directions from there, it is all pretty self-explanatory. Again, if you have problems or need help with anything, feel free to ask. Yu may need help figuring out how your message center works too, but oh well. Angie is here ~Rogue41 and Clay ~darkdruidsoulkeeper along with a whole bunch of other kids from our class...

okay, well thanks for the comment Jake!

I REALLY like the way the shadows fade away for the thumbtacks. GREAT job on the tape and the paper too. There is a little less of this protusion on the moth, but overall the piece is very well done!

As with the last painting, I like the way you've painted objects protruding out of the canvas, so to speak. Really nice detail on the moth, and the little piece of paper at the bottom with your name on was a nice touch. If you want a criticism, you probably want slightly darker shades on the edge of the moth's wings to bring it out from the background a little, but as they're similar shades you probably wanted to blend them in anyway. In which case... s'all good. Really love it.

thank you for noticing my love for creating a three dimensional feel with my art, as i always try to integrate items that look like they have mass, and, as you pointed out, look to protrude from the painting. Thank you for your kind comment.

And thank you even more for your criticism! The moth's shadow should be darker 'round the edges to make it jump more from the background. And when you say that it blends in with the background (even though you liked that fact), it was actually a fatal mistake to use the moth's colors in the background. Color theory, as i'm sure already know, states that warm colors advance forward while cooler colors recede to the back. Painting the tape, thumbtacks, and the moth with warm colors (burnt sieena, burnt umber, yellows, oranges, and pinks) was a good thing to do, as i wanted those three-dimensional objects to "jut" forward. But when i was painting the background, i wasn't really thinking, and used WARM colors!!! i wanted to rip my hair out! This piece would pop so much better if the background had blues and cooler-browns (perhaps raw umber? and the like), as those colors would recede. But, oh well, not much i can do about that now, except learn from the mistake.

Sorry for the lenghty message, but i really just wanted to thank you for your criticism, it is greatly appreciated. :D

This is beautiful, the detail is amazing, and the background is almost as impressive as the moth itself. I adore the shadows of the pins :)

:) I got myself some acrylics recently, but my brain remains in watercolour mode. I tend to be quite messy with acrylics and just pile on the paint!

Yay for insects!, and I think you did a great job on the hairy texture.
I must say I like the tape, and the shadows of the pins look good too. ^^
How long did it take to complete this?

:iconjeffquinn:
jeffquinn Featured By Owner May 14, 2005
thank you!

this took about...hmmm....about 30 minutes for the background, 4 hours for the moth, 45 minutes for the tape and paper, 1 hour for the pins, and then about an hour for touch-ups. so it took about...7 to 8 hours total...to complete. ;P this is a quick painting compared to some of my other stuff.

*fap fap fap* I love moths way too much. MORE MOTHS.

Uh, and now for a more relevant comment: I LOVE how you added the bits of paper, and the masking tape species name tag. That is completely something I'd do, too. GET OUT OF MY HEAD.

Wow, that was not relevant, I'm sorry. :(

ha, that was perfectly coherent and relevant! be then again, i'm slightly insane, so incoherent statements tend to make sense to me...

yeah...moths are great. i guess that comes from your mothman and volucris [sorry times infinity if i spelled it incorrect] fixation ;) i just like their fuzzy little bodies...and the tape and paper were really fun to paint...glad you like'd 'em ;P

thanks for the fave, by the way.
