Artist's Comments

i'm so unhappy with this that i'm calling it a "study." i'll repaint it. experimenting with a new style; i'm a mess.

acrylic on masonite. i hate masonite.

:bulletred::bulletred::bulletred:

Update: too much emo, sorry. anyway, continuing to experiment with this style with admittedly more success. success is good.

I thought you said you quit art forever and ever and ever because of your accursed mediocrity?

I just noticed something. You have super powers. That is so cool. Can you fly?

why are you a mess? what is happening? we all go through periods of artist block or whatever, it really sux but it just happens. Just keep on you talented person, and when you find your grove again you will have grown in ways unimagineable, you should know that, we all know that, it is just hard when we are going through it..............................:hug:

I think you are just too hard on yourself. Please have faith in yourself, you are a talented artist :hug:

i think maybe you're discouraged because you seem to be experimenting with a style you might be unfamiliar with. i don't think i've seen you work in such a cubistic form like this. i, however, love it, even though you may not. i think it's a good change. it's nice to see some variation. i love all your work, jeff. i think this piece is great. in fact, it's a favorite.

Nice job Jeff, I like those fish. Where can you get one of those at? I'd like to get one for my aquarium.

Don't be disappointed! I really like this one (and all of your work!). I like how the water in the air looks. It's a cool contrast to the cubism.

Why do you hate masonite? I'm just getting ready to gesso up some 3-ply plywood which will be similar to masonite and so I'm just wondering. ...
okay, now: I can see why YOU would be unhappy with this. The fish isn't as realistic as you usually do, nor is the fly or "spit". BUT... yes, there is one, the simplification of the background into simple geometry, i.e. squares and rectangles, which is painted in broad and bold strokes in which one can see the brushstrokes is very nice and in the end will contrast very nicely with the subject when you get everything balanced to your approval. =) There is a lot of potential with this and I'm very glad that you're going to revist it. Can't wait to see how you work out the kinks.

technically, the fish doesn't spit into the air. it's more of a "wait for an insect to land on a leaf then spit." but then, whatever, like you said, it is a study. i can make out that it is an archer, but then again, it sorta looks cartoony. just for hints although, you probably know this already, the fish has somewhat disproportionatly large eyes located to the almost very front of the fish, almost as far as it's big eyes could carry it (probably how it has such good aiming skills), as well as a large mouth that stretches to the back of the eye. in addition, the fish has somewhat a larger body than in proportion to it's head, similar to rainbowfish found in austrailia, where the bottom side of the fish looks as if it's stretched. okay, i'll stop rambling, good luck on fixing it.
