Artist's Comments

meet Dsungaripterus weii, a Cretaceous, Chinese pterosaur. And yes, it is balancing ammonites on the tip of his beak.

Part of a wacky series of mine...

:bulletred:layout pencil on 80 lb drawing paper, about 7 by 10 inches:bulletred:

EDIT 07.22.05: did a little editing in photoStudio...for fun.

Heh! I like these pterosaurs-balancing-stuff pics! Much more to come? Quetzalcoatlus balancing a chair?:D
:iconjeffquinn:
Hah, thanks a lot! I know, these drawings are really wierd, aren't they? I don't know how i came up with this idea. And yes, there will be many, many more to come ;) Very funny joke! I think this series is turning into a three-ring circus more than anything else! For my next one i actually was going to do a Quetzalcoatlus, then maybe a thalassodromeus, a nyctosaurus (the species with that rediculus sail), and maybe a tapejara imperator. The chair-balancing idea is a really good one, i think i just might do it to humor you...
Thanks for the :+fav:s! and I'm gald you think they're funny.
Oh, and as for Quetzalcoatlus, i've been trying to research it lately, and it seems that for every article i find, the cranial crest is described or drawn differently....I am so confused!!! Sometimes it's a long low crest that extends forward, or a short and high crest (almost reminiscent of an oviraptor, i guess is the best comparison), sometimes it's this tupuxuara looking thing, and sometimes it's almost like that of a P. sternbergi!!? Is there any way that you could help me by telling me which crest it should be? I would greatly appreciate your answer!
Thanks again! - and sorry for being so wordy...

Hahaa! I`ll be favoring all of these when you get time to draw and submit them ;) They are VERY funny! Yet, artistically great and "sauritically" good-looking! The chair-idea popped in to my head when I was thinking of something well... more equal to the size this huge pterosaur, of course a thing like bicycle (which somehow popped into my mind first) would seem quite too heavy, but basic-common-normal-traditional chair would seem great! It`s nice if this inspired you:D
As for Quetzalcoatlus-head, I believe you`ll find some good references in the Net if you just search hard enough. But if I would make a Quetzalcoatlus-restoration I would trust in two versions of crests (otherwise they look quite same, except for the crest) Remember, this is what I would do and what I believe is correct; Quetzalcoatlus sp. with relatively small bony "bump" and bigger Quetzalcoatlus nothropi with bigger "crest" or lacking it (sexual dimorphism?).
There are few good resources here:
>Lil' weird, but ok I think<,
>one here<,
>here`s one Q. sp by John Sibbick himself< ,
>and his vision of Q. nothoropi<
>and this is on what I would personally base my illustration of Q.sp<
:o uuuu, btw gotta go and add you to my journal. Please do spam my message centre if you need info or opinions, I`ll try my best:D
:iconjeffquinn:
Thank you so much for the helpful follow-up and comments! Those links were great! I was definitely thinking a Quetzalcoatlus sp rather than a Q. northropi for personal preference reasons, and i had actually considered using Sibbick's Q. sp sketch for reference (the one with the long and low crest) but i really like the one that you would choose too, as the crest is a little more impressive. I'll just try sketching a few alternate crests based on these and see which one looks the best. ;)
Let's see: a bicycle, an oven, a ladder, a chair...these pterosaurs sure are getting talented! I really like the bicycle idea, too...maybe with a Zhejiangopterus? I will definitely be doing the chair idea, though; it's just too good of an idea to pass up (thanks :) ). Right now, this very minute, i'm working on a Thalassodromeus, and i think it will be balancing either horseshoe crabs, or trilobites, but i'm not sure yet... So, the quetzalcoatlus with the chair is next on my to do list...
Thank you for taking interest in this strange little series and all your help! And thank you for adding me and my avatar to your Journal!

Well, as for the skull, I'd recommend using my reconstruction [link] I based it off photos of the actual specimens. I don't think I would use the skeletal reconstruction you would use, it was done by Dave Peters and despite the fact he was more sane when he did that, I think there might be some proportional problems. I'd use Greg Paul's skeletal [link] While the reconstructions are a good reference for the skeletons, the large crests Paul uses are speculative and IMO, unlikely. I don't think any pterosaur with such a long neck could have such a proportionally huge crest, if it happened to encounter a wind blowing at a bad angle it would probably end up snapping its neck. I'd definately go with a small, low crest.

Thanks for taking part in our discussion with comprefensive facts. Apparently I had forgotten that you also had Quetzalcoatlus in your collection of skulls :o. BTW, link to GSP's skeletal doesn`t vorck. Ok... I won`t type anymore, I think I`m getting bit drunk
:iconarchosaurian:
Hmmm... This buggy thing seems to have included a period at the end of the URL.

This should work:
